Herdez | Hormel Foods
Authenticity Was Never the Question.
First, bring tradition closer. Then, make it easier to serve.

The Challenge
In a category where nearly every brand could claim to be authentically Mexican, Herdez did not need to prove where it came from. Herdez Salsa, Doña María Mole and Búfalo Hot Sauce already carried generations of recognition among Mexican consumers.
The challenge was to turn that inherited familiarity into relevance for life in the United States—first by reminding consumers that the brands they knew from Mexico were already available here, and then by showing how they could make traditional flavor easier to bring to the table.
The Idea
Mexican heritage was not the differentiator. Familiarity was.
Rather than invent a new identity, the campaign used humor and recognizable family dynamics to present Herdez as the same tradition consumers already knew—now closer and easier to enjoy.
The Campaign
Phase One: Already Here
When a dinner guest asks for Herdez Salsa, the host goes all the way to Mexico to bring it back. The exaggerated journey delivers a simple reminder: authentic Mexican flavor no longer required a trip home. Herdez was already here.
Phase Two: Tradition Made Practical
Once availability was no longer the central question, the message shifted to practicality.
In “Desde Arriba,” a young woman struggling to recreate her family’s salsa turns to her grandmother for guidance from above. Her grandmother reveals Herdez as her secret. The final reveal—that she is not in heaven but simply standing on a chair—turns the advice into an unexpected joke.
The message was equally simple: choosing Herdez did not mean abandoning tradition. It was an easier way to continue it.
Together, the two commercials moved the conversation from “Can I find the authentic product I know?” to “Can I serve that same tradition without making everything from scratch?”
Herdez was not positioned as an alternative to tradition, but as a practical way to keep it alive.
