SPAM | Hormel Foods
Turning Recognition Into Curiosity.
Nearly 77% were non-users. One invitation to imagine SPAM differently.
The Challenge
SPAM was an American icon with significant general-market awareness, yet nearly 77% of U.S. Hispanics were non-users. The challenge was not simply to translate the brand, but to make the product relevant to busy Hispanic households by demonstrating its versatility, convenience and place in foods they already enjoyed.
The Idea
Rather than explain what SPAM was, we invited consumers to imagine what it could become. Built around the platform “Imagínalo,” the campaign placed SPAM inside tortas, taquitos, breakfast burritos and other familiar dishes. Television closed with “Imagínalo. Sabórealo.” while outdoor and shopper materials made the invitation actionable with “Imagínalo. Prepáralo.”
The Campaign
At the center was “Balloons,” a high-energy television commercial that marked the brand’s U.S. Spanish-language TV debut. It was supported by outdoor and transit advertising, a free-standing insert with a coupon and a Spanish-language recipe booklet.
Original recipes were developed and brought to life through a dedicated food photography shoot, giving every execution both appetite appeal and practical value.
The Outcome
The campaign marked SPAM’s first entry into Spanish-language television in the United States. Its centerpiece commercial, “Balloons,” was later recognized with a Hermes Creative Award.
